SUMMARY OF THE WESTERN UNION® MONEY TRANSFERSM SERVICE TERMS AND CONDITIONS (FOR THE FULL TERMS AND CONDITIONS, PLEASE ASK ANY WESTERN UNION AGENT OR VISIT WWW.WESTERNUNION.COM.AU)

Western Union® Money TransferSM transactions can be sent and picked up at most Western Union® Agent locations worldwide. Regular money transfers are usually available within minutes for pick up by the receiver, subject to the opening hours of the receiving Western Union Agent (“Agent”) location. Exceeding amount limitations, regulatory restrictions or other restrictions in certain countries may delay the transaction. Western Union does not act as the agent or representative of any bank for any purpose and does not accept deposits on behalf of any bank.

Money transfers will normally be paid in cash, but some Agents may pay by cheque or a combination of cash and cheque or may offer or the receiver may choose other ways to receive funds and some money transfers may be paid to accounts. All cash payments are subject to availability, receivers showing documentary evidence of their identity and providing all details about the money transfer required by Western Union, including sender’s and receiver’s names, country of origin, approximate sum, money transfer control number and any other conditions or requirements applicable at the Agent location. The sender authorizes Western Union to honor the receiver’s choice of method to receive funds even if it differs from the sender’s. Cash money transfers shall be paid to the person that Agents deem entitled to receive the transaction after verification of identity often through examination of identification documents. Such payment can be made even when the form filled out by the receiver contains errors. Neither Western Union nor its Agents carry out a comparison of the “To Send Money” form against the “To Receive Money” form to verify the address given for the receiver. In some destinations the receiver may be required to provide identification, a test question answer or both to receive funds in cash. Test questions are not an additional security feature and cannot be used to time or delay the payment of a transaction and are prohibited in certain countries. Applicable law prohibits money transmitters from doing business with certain individuals and countries. Customers are sometimes required to provide additional identification or information, delaying transactions.

TRANSFER FEES: Written information explaining how Western Union charges the sender for making a money transfer will either be displayed prominently at the Agent location or shown to the sender prior to completion of the payment order. In certain cases, payment of a money transfer may be subject to local taxes and service charges. FOREIGN EXCHANGE: Money transfer payments will normally be made in the currency of the destination country. In addition to the transfer fee applicable to each transfer and if the currency which the sender presents to an Agent is not the currency to be received by the receiver, all currency is converted at Western Union’s then current rate of exchange. The currency will be converted at the time of transfer and the receiver will receive the foreign currency amount shown on the Transaction Receipt. In a few countries local regulations require the currency to be converted at the time the receiver is paid, in which case the exchange rate and any amounts shown on the Transaction Receipt may be subject to exchange rate fluctuations between the time of transfer and the time the receiver collects the funds.

SPECIAL SERVICES: Where available, Western Union offers free SMS notification to indicate that the transaction has been collected by the receiver (for the sender) or that funds are available for collection (for the receiver). Western Union will send SMS messages to a third party gateway for delivery. ACCOUNT BASED TRANSFERS: Where available, the receiver may incur additional fees for receiving the sender’s funds through a mobile telephone or to a bank or other account. Additional costs or delay may occur if transfers are not sent to a local (receiver) currency account. The receiver’s agreement with its mobile phone service, mWallet, bank or other account provider governs the account and determines their rights, liability, fees, funds availability and account limitations. In the event that the account number provided (including mobile phone numbers for mobile accounts) does not belong to the named receiver, the transfer will be credited to the account number provided by the sender. Western Union may make money from fees associated with use of an account. REFUND - Western Union will refund the principal amount of a money transfer upon the sender’s written request if payment has not made or credited. Transfer fees are not refunded if the transfer is stopped at the sender’s request.

LIABILITY: Western Union disclaims all liability in respect of the sender’s relationship with the receiver, without limitation, in respect of the delivery or suitability of any goods or services paid for by means of a Western Union money transfer. The sender’s transaction data is confidential to him and should not be shared with any other person other than his receiver. The sender is cautioned against sending money to any person he does not know. In no event shall Western Union or any of its Agents be liable if the sender communicates transactional data to any person other than his receiver. To the extent permitted by law, in no event shall Western Union or any of its Agents be liable for damages for delay, nonpayment or underpayment of this money transfer, or non-delivery of any supplemental message, whether caused by negligence on the part of their employees or agents or otherwise, beyond the sum equivalent to US$500 (in addition to refunding the principal amount of the money transfer and the transfer fee). In no event will Western Union or its Agents be liable for any indirect, special, incidental, or consequential damages. The foregoing disclaimer shall not limit Western Union’s or Agent’s liability for damages resulting from Western Union’s or Agent’s gross negligence or intentional misconduct in those jurisdictions where such a limitation of liability is void. The foregoing disclaimer shall not exclude Western Union’s nor its Agent’s liability for any condition or warranty that cannot be excluded by law including any implied warranty that it will render services with due care and skill, and Western Union’s and its Agent’s liability for breach of such condition or warranty shall be limited to the greater of the cost of providing the affected service again and the sum equivalent to US$500.

DATA PROTECTION: Your personal information is processed under applicable laws and is controlled & used by Western Union for the purposes of providing the requested services. Your information is used to provide you with the services you have asked for and may also be used in connection with other services, products, convenience and/or rewards programs, you signed up for with Western Union or its affiliates, and, subject to your choices, send you commercial communications. Providing your information and that of the receiver of our services is voluntary but necessary to execute the transaction. You consent to Western Union disclosing or transferring your information and Third Party Information to third parties to carry out transactions. Western Union may also disclose such information to third parties, where reasonably necessary, for the purposes of the prevention, detection, investigation and prosecution of crime, or when required by law, and the recipients may further disclose the information for these and other related purposes. Is there a fee to send money through Western Union?

Yes, there are fees associated with sending money through Western Union, and they can vary based on how much money you’re sending, where it’s going, and the payment method you choose. Sending money online or using the app usually incurs lower fees than in-person transactions. It’s best to calculate the fees using the Price Estimator on the Western Union website to know exactly how much your transaction will cost.

How long does it take for the money to reach the recipient?

Delivery times vary depending on the service option you choose. Instant or same-day services are available for certain countries and payment methods, but they might come with higher fees. Standard services typically allow the recipient to collect the money within one to three business days. The exact timing can be affected by factors such as the recipient’s country, the selected payout method, and local regulations.

Common mistakes

When sending money through Western Union, filling out the form accurately is crucial to ensure that the transaction is successful and secure. However, there are common mistakes people often make during this process. Identifying these errors can vastly improve the chances of a smooth transfer. Here are nine such mistakes:

  1. Not double-checking the recipient's information. It's imperative to verify the recipient's name and details as they appear on their ID. Any discrepancy can result in delays or the money being unretrievable.

  2. Entering incorrect contact information. Filling in the wrong phone number or email address for either the sender or the recipient can complicate communication regarding the transaction.

  3. Omitting the test question and answer when necessary. Some transactions, especially those to certain destinations, may require a test question and answer for additional security. If needed and not provided, it could halt the process.

  4. Not specifying the currency clearly. If you don't make it clear what currency the recipient should receive the money in, it could lead to confusion or unintended losses due to currency conversion.

  5. Misunderstanding the fees involved. Not all fees are the same for every transaction; they can vary based on amount, destination, and speed of service. Assuming otherwise can cause unexpected costs.

  6. Forgetting to sign the form. An unsigned form is considered incomplete and will not be processed until the omission is rectified.

  7. Ignoring the limits on amounts that can be sent. Western Union has maximum and minimum limits that can be transferred per transaction, which can vary by location and the sender's transaction history.

  8. Filling out the form in a hurry and making legibility mistakes. If the handwriting is not clear or details are filled in incorrectly, it can delay the money transfer.

  9. Overlooking to keep a copy of the transaction details. Not having a record of the transaction, including the tracking number (MTCN), can make it challenging to track the transfer or address issues if they arise.

Avoiding these mistakes can greatly enhance the experience of using Western Union's services for both the sender and the recipient. Taking the time to fill out the form carefully and accurately is key to a successful money transfer.

  • Transaction History Record: Individuals who frequently send money may need to present a history of their transactions. This can demonstrate the regularity and purpose of transfers, which is especially important for large sums.
  • Proof of Source of Funds: Depending on the amount being sent or if unusual activity is detected, the sender might be required to show where the funds came from. This could be a bank statement, a pay slip, or similar documents.
  • Consent Form for Minor: If the receiver is under the legal age, a consent form signed by a parent or guardian may be necessary. This form permits the minor to collect the money sent through Western Union.

Dos and Don'ts

When filling out a Western Union form, it's crucial to ensure accuracy and security in your transactions. Below are guidelines to help you navigate the process smoothly and safely.

  • Do verify the recipient's information. Double-check the spelling of the recipient's name, their location, and any other required details to ensure the money reaches the right person.
  • Don't rush through the form. Take your time to read and fill out each section carefully. Mistakes can delay the transaction or lead to the funds being sent to the wrong person.
  • Do use a secure connection. When filling out the form online, ensure you are using a safe and private internet connection to protect your personal information.
  • Don't share your transaction details. Keep your transaction number (MTCN) and other sensitive information confidential to prevent unauthorized access to your funds.
  • Do keep your receipt. After completing the transaction, save your receipt or any confirmation documents. This will be crucial if you need to track the funds or resolve any issues.
  • Don't use public or shared computers. Filling out the form on a public or shared computer increases the risk of your personal information being compromised.
  • Do review the form before submission. A quick review before finalizing can catch any errors or omitted details, ensuring the transaction process is smooth.
  • Don't send money to strangers. Be cautious of scams asking you to send money to people you do not know. Verify the authenticity of any requests for money, especially in emergency situations or offers too good to be true.
  • Do report any issues immediately. Contact Western Union right away if you encounter any problems or if you suspect fraudulent activity related to your transaction.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure your Western Union transactions are secure, accurate, and successful, protecting both your interests and those of the recipient.

Misconceptions

When dealing with Western Union forms, people often encounter misconceptions. It's important to clear these up to ensure that users understand how to properly use this form of money transfer. Below, we will address some of these common misunderstandings.

  • Sending money anonymously is allowed. Contrary to what some believe, Western Union requires both the sender and receiver to provide identification for transactions. This is to comply with legal regulations aimed at preventing fraud and money laundering.

  • Western Union forms do not need to be filled out accurately. Every section of the Western Union form must be completed with accurate information. Incorrect or incomplete forms can lead to delays or the cancellation of the transfer.

  • Transfers are irreversible. While it's often difficult to reverse a transfer once it has been dispatched, it is not impossible in certain situations. If the receiver has not yet collected the money, the sender can request to cancel the transfer.

  • Western Union is only for sending money abroad. Many people mistakenly believe that Western Union is solely for international transfers. However, it can also be used for domestic transfers within the same country.

  • There's a fixed fee for all transactions. The fee for sending money via Western Union varies based on factors such as the amount being sent, the destination, and the transfer method. There is not a one-size-fits-all fee.

  • Western Union transfers are instant. While many transfers through Western Union can be completed within minutes, not all are. Transfer time can depend on the destination country, the transfer method, and the amount of money being sent.

  • The only way to send money is in person at a Western Union branch. Western Union offers multiple ways to send money, including online, through their mobile app, and at physical locations. This flexibility is often overlooked by those not familiar with all of their services.

  • Receivers can only collect money in cash. Although receiving money in cash is a common option, Western Union also allows receivers to have funds deposited directly into their bank accounts or loaded onto a prepaid card, depending on the country.

Key takeaways

Western Union facilitates the quick transfer of funds across borders, serving as a critical tool for international transactions and personal remittances. When filling out and using the Western Union form, certain considerations ensure the process is smooth and secure. Here are four key takeaways for effectively navigating this service:

  1. Accuracy is paramount when filling out the Western Union form. Every detail, from the recipient’s full name to their location, must match their identification documents exactly. Inaccuracies can lead to delays or the inability to pick up the transferred funds. This is especially crucial in countries with strict regulations on money transfers.

  2. Fees and exchange rates vary by transaction. Before proceeding, it’s important to understand the costs associated with sending money through Western Union. These fees can depend on the amount being sent, the payment method (e.g., bank transfer, credit, debit), and the urgency of the transfer. Additionally, the exchange rate determined by Western Union will affect the final amount the recipient receives, so it's beneficial to compare rates for the most favorable terms.

  3. Choosing the right delivery method matters. Western Union offers several options for sending and receiving money, including bank transfers, cash pickups at physical locations, and mobile wallet deposits. Depending on the urgency of the transfer and the convenience for the recipient, selecting the appropriate method can enhance the effectiveness of the transaction.

  4. Security features are in place to protect both the sender and the recipient. Western Union requires identification for transactions and has mechanisms to track transfers and report suspicious activity. However, consumers must also be vigilant against fraud by only sending money to individuals they know personally and by verifying the cause if requested to send funds unexpectedly.

By keeping these key points in mind, users can navigate Western Union’s services efficiently, ensuring that their funds reach their intended destination safely and promptly. Whether for personal support, business transactions, or charitable donations, understanding the nuances of filling out and using the Western Union form is essential for a seamless experience.
